Beadwork Dec 2020/Jan 2021

 Hi Everyone!

It's been awhile since I posted.  Helping out with online kindergarten with my granddaughter keeps me very busy!  I know there are lots of grandparents out there stepping up to help their families.  It is a pleasure for me to help my little granddaughter learn her sight words and numbers.  She is delightful.  She also has more energy than anyone I know (except maybe her little sister!).

A few months ago, I managed to create a couple of designs that were accepted into Beadwork magazine in their Dec20/Jan21 issue.  I got an advance copy, so I couldn't wait to show you.

I just love the pendant on the cover.  It's a Vintaj piece with added beadwork stitched around it.  That and many wonderful designs are inside the magazine and it's well worth getting a copy.

Layered Leather Leaves (above) was so much fun to make!  It's in a boho style that's really quick and easy since it uses a die cutter and leaf die.

Another style that is a favorite of mine is the vintage look, and the necklace below with its dark brass, filigree and blend of moonstone and pearls fits that style.

There are five more lovely Fast and Fabulous designs for your making pleasure by designers you are sure to recognize and loads of stitched designs.

Happy Beading!

Crochet Button Bracelet and Earrings

Hi Crafters!

Today I want to show you a design that I had published in Bead-it Today.  If you haven't seen this bead magazine in your local stores, here's a link:  www.bead-it-today.com.  It's inexpensive ($3.99) compared to some of the other beading magazines and specializes in quick and easy, budget friendly projects.  There are some fun and informative articles about beading also.

My design features buttons, which I love to add to my jewelry designs.  But, these buttons are extra special because they look like crocheted flowers.  I have a special place in my heart for these, not only because I love the vintage look, but because my Grandma Rachel used to crochet the most beautiful, delicate roses and flowers in thread crochet.  I combined these crochet flower buttons with brass filigree (another of my faves!), yellow opal beads and some vintage twill tape that I inherited from my other grandmother, Grandma Irene.  (Yes, we are multi-generational savers!  I inherited the gene!)

This design was featured in the April issue of Bead-It Today and entitled "Classical".  If you can't find the magazine at your local craft store, check the website for back issues.

Amethyst and Filigree Festoon Necklace

Hi Creative Friends!

When I saw this blog hop for Edwardian-style jewelry over on Beading Daily, I thought - this is right up my alley.
I'm a big fan of vintage jewelry including everything from the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to Renaissance to more modern Victorian and Art Deco. But, I especially like the intricate romantic Edwardian styles.  So, I designed an Amethyst and Filigree Festoon Necklace for the occasion.

I think this is a very wearable Edwardian necklace.  It is certainly not as elaborate as some festoon necklaces, but it picks up some of the style with filigree, amethyst Czech glass and mauve glass pearls.

Here it is on a necklace form:

To read more about Edwardian jewelry and see another design I created, look here on the Cousin blog.  And, I've written and designed a book of my design impressions of vintage jewelry, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.  It's got a range of vintage styles with tidbits of historical information about Victoriana.

Thanks for stopping by!

Happiness is...creating every day!

Hi Crafty Friends!

Welcome to another round in the Designer Craft Connection blog hop.  Our theme for June is "Happiness is...", so you'll get to see what makes us happy.

For me, just the act of creating and designing a project makes me happy.  I love taking an idea and trying to bring it into physical existance.  It's absorbing and calls on all my skills and imagination to come up with something new and original.  It's the best job I've ever had!

In addition to the creative process, I love to share and, hopefully, inspire, others to be creative.  There are a host of people who have inspired and encouraged me along the way, and I want to pass that along.  And, I want to thank all those who are a continuing inspiration to me, whether it's family, my friends who get together to knit and chat, the kids who craft in my kitchen, or this amazing group of designers.

Here's a romantic, vintage-style necklace that I designed.  You can find the instructions in the summer issue of Crafts n' things.

Happy Crafting!  (Because crafting does make you happy!)

If you love vintage jewelry and shows like Downton Abbey, I think you'll enjoy it.  I designed this pearl choker for the post using Cousin components.  If you can't find these items at a store near you, you can order them from their website.  Although I purchased these components, Cousin did send me some other lovely items to use in my designs.

Tighten up the wires keeping it even across the strands. When even, crimp the crimp beads and trim the wires. Repeat for the other side.

Crafts n' things Weekly - charming key necklace

Hi Crafters!

Every week, Crafts n' things magazine has new online projects available free for that week.  This week's edition is out and features one of my designs - a chain necklace with charms.

Here's the link that will take you to the instructions on their website:

This necklace was originally one of the pieces I created for my book, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.  But, the number of projects had to be limited so it found a home at Crafts n' things!  I love it when life works like that!

Vintage Button Filigree Ring

Hi Everyone!

This month (yes, another month has gone by already!) the designers of the Designer Crafts Connection blog circle have gone vintage.  There's a wide range of what one might consider vintage--you could go back 10 years or you could go back 100!  I'm sure it will be an amazing journey through time checking out all the designs.  You can see them all by clicking on the big blue button to the left of this post.

I have a lot of vintage things around my house.  My Grandma Irene was very crafty and very frugal.  She never missed a sale!  As a result, I have a lot of vintage material passed down from her.  Thanks, Grandma!

One of the things I inherited from her are vintage buttons.  I was working on a metal filigree ring and looking for the perfect bead to go into the center of it, when I thought of the button collection.  One of them was the perfect size and shape for the center of the ring.  It's a beautiful blue crystal button that has a hint of green at the base and was made in "Western Germany" according to the card.  It's probably from the late 1940's or 50's.

Here's a few of the vintage buttons I have.  The one I used in the ring is at the bottom left.

It's a simple ring to make as you'll see from the following:
Here are the components:  a button, bead cap, a dapped filigree flower, a flat filigree flower, a 2 1/2" long filigree link and a piece of wire.  You'll also need jewelry glue, a dowel or mandrel to shape the ring, round-nose pliers and wire nippers.

Slide the wire through the button and place it into the bead cap.  Press the prongs against the button.

Slide the wire ends through the holes in the dapped flower.

Slide the wires through the second flower filigree and press the wires against the back of the flower.  Trim to about 1/2" and make a loop to hold.  Press these against the back of the flower.

Bend the filigree link around a dowel or ring mandrel to shape it into the ring.  It will be adjustable.

Glue the flower assembly to the ring with jewelry glue.

And, there you have it - the finished ring!  You could also use the flower assembly as a pendant or on a bracelet.

Have fun browsing among all the other fabulous vintage designs.  And, if you are looking for more vintage jewelry designs like this ring, check out my book, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.
Happy vintage, retro, mid-century Crafting!

Vintage Impressions Jewelry

Happy New Year!

Last spring I submitted a jewelry book proposal.  It was in a niche that I thought needed to be filled, and one that I felt suited my design bent and style.  I've always been drawn to the vintage look.  The publisher and its editors agreed and I got the go-ahead to work on it, which I did for most of the summer.  I designed and refined.  Then, I worked with the editors to further enhance, elaborate and eliminate until the book was complete.  It was quite a process and this is the first book of this size (64 pages) that I have designed.  So, I'm pleased and excited to announce the release of my new book!

It's just been released on the website.  I don't even have a copy yet, but when I do I hope to have a give-away of the book.  I hope you'll stop back by for that!

And, Monday, the 9th will be our Designer Crafts Connection blog hop.  The topic is journaling and I'm sure there will be lots of wonderful projects and ideas to start your year off right!

Happy Crafting!
