Simply Beads Interview

Hi Crafty Friends!

This month I'm pleased to be a featured artist in the Simply Beads newsletter from Annie's.  Here's a link to the interview.  It features some of my crafting history, what I'm up to now and even a photo of my craft room.  (I had to clean for quite awhile to get this photo!)
My space

It was lovely to be featured in the newsletter as I have a long association with Annie's.  They published my last beading book a few years ago.

And, when their beading magazine, Simply Beads, was being published, I had several designs published there.   A couple of my designs are also featured in their beading kits.  Before that, they also published numerous books and designs of mine in plastic canvas needlepoint over the last few years (really, decades!).

It's been a great association and I've worked with many wonderful people there, so it's a connection I'm glad to continue and to promote.

Each newsletter features information on beading and a free design.  Here's the latest free design from editor Keri Lee Sereika.  Great design - I'd like these in a couple of different colors!

Amethyst and Filigree Festoon Necklace

Hi Creative Friends!

When I saw this blog hop for Edwardian-style jewelry over on Beading Daily, I thought - this is right up my alley.
I'm a big fan of vintage jewelry including everything from the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to Renaissance to more modern Victorian and Art Deco. But, I especially like the intricate romantic Edwardian styles.  So, I designed an Amethyst and Filigree Festoon Necklace for the occasion.

I think this is a very wearable Edwardian necklace.  It is certainly not as elaborate as some festoon necklaces, but it picks up some of the style with filigree, amethyst Czech glass and mauve glass pearls.

Here it is on a necklace form:

To read more about Edwardian jewelry and see another design I created, look here on the Cousin blog.  And, I've written and designed a book of my design impressions of vintage jewelry, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.  It's got a range of vintage styles with tidbits of historical information about Victoriana.

Guest Blogger on Cousin - Pearl Choker

Hi Crafters!

I am happy to post that I am a Guest Blogger on the Cousin website this month.  You can read my blog post at http://www.cousin.com/blog/13-05-10/Terry_Ricioli_The_Allure_of_the_British_Edwardian_Era.aspx.

If you love vintage jewelry and shows like Downton Abbey, I think you'll enjoy it.  I designed this pearl choker for the post using Cousin components.  If you can't find these items at a store near you, you can order them from their website.  Although I purchased these components, Cousin did send me some other lovely items to use in my designs.

Pearl Choker

Size: 15” with adjustable clasp of about 1”

Materials:

156 Lt. Grey Pearls, 6mm round (Pearl Elegance™ 3244311)
Round Deco Snap Base (Snap in Style ™ 34732301)
Metal Accent (Snap in Style ™ 34730038)
6 3-hole Metal Beads (Jewelry Basics 34708262)
Acrylic Cameo Accent (Formal Chic Make the Connection ™ 34731104
6 – 10” pieces bead stringing wire
12 Silver crimp beads
Silver Plate 3 Strand Rod Clasp (Plated Silver Elegance™)

Instructions:

1. Place snap base loop at bottom center. Determine placement of 3 strands of wire on each side by counting holes and spacing evenly from the bottom center loop.
2. String wire through hole and string 3 pearls over the wire and the tail. Slide on a crimp bead and crimp. Trim wire. Repeat for the remaining five strands.
3. Slide a 3-hole metal bead over all 3 strands covering the crimp bead. Repeat for the other side.
4. String 10 pearls on each strand. Then, string a 3-hole metal bead over the strands on each side. Repeat this step. String 3 pearls on each strand.
5. String a crimp bead on one of the top strands of wire and then go through the top loop on the clasp. Pass the wire back through the crimp bead. Repeat for the other 2 strands on one side. Tighten up the wires keeping it even across the strands. When even, crimp the crimp beads and trim the wires. Repeat for the other side.
6. Remove the loop from the cameo accent and attach it to the bottom loop of the snap base with the jump ring. Snap metal accent into snap base.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.  I hope you enjoy this design!  I'd love to hear your comments!

Crafts n' things Weekly - charming key necklace

Hi Crafters!

Every week, Crafts n' things magazine has new online projects available free for that week.  This week's edition is out and features one of my designs - a chain necklace with charms.

Here's the link that will take you to the instructions on their website:

This necklace was originally one of the pieces I created for my book, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.  But, the number of projects had to be limited so it found a home at Crafts n' things!  I love it when life works like that!

I'm a Movie Star!

Well, maybe not a movie star, but I surely feel special today!  My designing friend, Carol Heppner, asked if she could interview me about my book.  Of course, I said yes!

You can visit her blog to read it!  I've never been interviewed before, so I will be walking on air all week!

Don't forget to add a comment or follow me to enter the drawing for the book.  It's open all month.

Book Giveaway

Hi Crafters!
In celebration of National Craft Month, I'm giving away a copy of my new book, Vintage Impressions Jewelry.  If you leave a comment or follow my blog this month, you'll be entered in the drawing for the book.
If you want to see some of the projects in the book, click on the image on the sidebar, which will take you to the website of my publisher, Annie's Attic.

And, since I love this style of jewelry, and I have lots of materials left from the book, I thought I'd show you another design in the same style.   I hope you will use it as inspiration for your own creative endeavors.

This is another bar pin in a Victorian style using the same filigree that is used in the pin on the front cover of the book.  I layered some filigrees and a bead in the center and hung a dangle below it.  Then, I hung dangles from a jump ring on each end.

Here's some detail on the center layering.

Layering on pin
http://www.terryriciolidesigns.blogspot.com/
The far left filigree is on the bottom of the layers.  It is dapped slightly, which means it is curved in a dapping block by pressing down on it or lightly hammering it in the center.  The second daisy-shaped filigree is curved around the glass rondelle bead at the far right and the result is shown next to the bead.  Then a small gunmetal spacer was added on top the bead.  A short piece of head pin holds the layers together, and it is glued to the center of the bar filigree with E6000.  The beads are Czech pressed glass in a peach and peach AB.  The crystals are Swarovski in khaki, and all the filigree pieces are from Vintaj.

You can glue a pin back to the center back or attach chains to each side and wear it as a necklace.

Enjoy!  Don't forget to leave a comment or follow my blog to be entered in the drawing for the book.

Happy Crafting!

Vintage Impressions Jewelry

Happy New Year!

Last spring I submitted a jewelry book proposal.  It was in a niche that I thought needed to be filled, and one that I felt suited my design bent and style.  I've always been drawn to the vintage look.  The publisher and its editors agreed and I got the go-ahead to work on it, which I did for most of the summer.  I designed and refined.  Then, I worked with the editors to further enhance, elaborate and eliminate until the book was complete.  It was quite a process and this is the first book of this size (64 pages) that I have designed.  So, I'm pleased and excited to announce the release of my new book!

It's just been released on the website.  I don't even have a copy yet, but when I do I hope to have a give-away of the book.  I hope you'll stop back by for that!

And, Monday, the 9th will be our Designer Crafts Connection blog hop.  The topic is journaling and I'm sure there will be lots of wonderful projects and ideas to start your year off right!

Happy Crafting!
