Helping out

Hi folks!

After so many years of creating, things begin to pile up.  I'm at the stage in my life where I am going to start divesting of all these treasures.  It probably should have been done a long time ago, I know.  I was especially reminded of that this summer when my family cleaned out my Mom's house in order to sell it.  We are a family of savers, recyclers and re-users, but you can only use so much!

So, stay tuned as I sort and compile and de-stash.  I'll have some boxes of craft books, magazines and supplies that you may need more than I do.

To make a start, I donated this necklace and some matching earrings to my church festival as a silent auction item.  I'm sure that's better than gathering dust in my craft room.

Looking forward to a clearer space in which to create more fun projects!  What do you do with your extra craft projects and supplies?  Love to hear your ideas.

Burlap and Lace with Sparkle

Hi Everyone!

Today, I'm creating some quick and easy wedding ideas using trims and accessories from Expo International.

Here's what I received:

When I saw these trims, the colors just said wedding décor to me.  But, I like a more rustic look , so I decided to add some burlap to the lace and sparkle.

I wrapped a mason jar to hold a bouquet or a candle and made a matching napkin ring, which combines burlap ribbon with the lace and the daisy trim that I received.  I love the fresh look of the daisy trim against the burlap.  It would be so cute for a country wedding or bridal shower.
Napkin Ring and Wrapped Mason Jar
These are very easy to create.  Just cut the burlap ribbon to fit the jar and napkin.  Then, glue lace to the back of the ribbon.  Glue the ends to create a ring, then adhere the daisy trim.

This embroidery hoop orb decoration can be used to decorate the table or hung above it.

To construct this hoop decoration, paint an embroidery hoop white, then sand the edges to show some of the wood.  Glue the smaller hoop inside the larger with hot glue.  Glue ivy and flowers of your choice inside the hoop and on top.  Glue the bird among the flowers inside the hoop  Add pieces of burlap ribbon, pieces of lace and loops of the rhinestone and pearl trim in the top arrangement.  For this hoop decoration, I used the white dove accent, the rhinestone and pearl trim and pieces of the organza and lace trim.

Here are the links to the trims I used:

Krystal Rhinestone Daisy Trim
Alessana 1/8" Rhinestone and Pearl Trim
6" x 5" White Dove Bird Accent
Organza and Lace Trim

And, there were a few that I received that I didn't use in this set:

Sequin Trim
Asai 1/2" Centerpiece Rhinestone Trim
Lorlana Baby PomPom Fringe

Manufacturer's Challenge - deflecto®

Hello Crafty Friends!

This month, we have another manufacturer's challenge on the Designer Crafts Connection.  A manufacturer's challenge is when some of us designers on the DCC receive a sample of product from a company with which to create a project.  In return, we use our time and talents and blog to promote the project, the manufacturer and each other.

Our manufacturer on this hop is deflecto®, a producer of plastic frames, organizers, floor mats and other office and home related products.

This is the wonderful selection of items that I received.

deflecto® products
When I get a new product and I haven't worked with it, I do a little research to see what has been done. I like to see if other designers and crafters have tried ideas I am considering.  It helps me to know what works and what doesn't and it helps me create something unique.  One of the places I checked was the deflecto® blog. To see the projects from their design team, go to their blog.  Ann Butler Designs has recently hosted a deflecto® hop, too, and here is that link.  I found that a lot of different products can be used and I decided to try some paint and decoupage and see how that worked with the plastic surfaces.

I loved the stackable cube organizer that I received and I had on hand some chalk paint that I bought to use on furniture.  I wasn't sure that it would work on the plastic, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The DecoArt® Americana® Décor™ Chalky Finish Paint adhered to the surface very well.  The sides of the organizer are textured, so the paint adhered and covered evenly there.  But, it worked well on the smooth plastic of the drawers also.  Here's how the organizer looked after the first coat of paint:

Stackable Cube Organizer
Not bad, but I wanted to have more texture and cover up my uneven brush strokes, so I add a second coat.  This time I used a sponge instead of a brush.

I liked that much better, but it needed some contrast.  I found some matching paper and decoupaged the sides and top.
Decoupaged and Painted Organizer

You can use this organizer anywhere.  Coordinate it with a child's room, the bathroom, the kitchen, your work space - anywhere you need a little storage.  Decorate a few and stack them up; the organizer comes with clips to hold multiples together.  Add labels on the drawers or embellishments like stickers or trims.  I added some die cut labels to the front.  I still haven't decided what I'll put in these, so the labels are blank, but I think it will end up on my sewing table.  It's perfect for thread, needles, bobbins and other sewing paraphernalia.

Be sure to check out the rest of the deflecto® blog hop posts to see what the other designers have created with these great products.  Go forward or back on the big blue Designer Crafts Connection button on my sidebar to start or go to the Designer Crafts Connection blog for all the links in one place.  For more information on deflecto® products for crafts, go to their site.

There is a giveaway.  To enter, leave a comment on any of the linked blogs, enter the Rafflecoper on the Designer Crafts Connection blog and like the deflecto® facebook page!  Here's what you can win!

Roly-Poly Penguin with Smoothfoam™

Hi Crafters!

Today I'm part of a blog hop highlighting Smoothfoam™ - The Crafter's Foam.  I've created a little penguin using Smoothfoam™ balls, paint, tacky glue, craft foam, felt and wiggle eyes.  He's easy to make.  He'll like hanging out on your tree or in a winter snow scene on your mantel or table.
Roly-Poly Penguin with Smoothfoam™
Design by Terry Ricioli
Here's how to make this cute (if I do say so!) Roly-Poly Penguin:

Materials:
2 Smoothfoam™ balls: 1 1/2" and 2"
Black and white acrylic paint
Scraps of black, orange and pink craft foam
8" x 1/2" strip of red felt
Wiggle eyes

Tools:
Small teardrop wood piece for pattern
Tacky glue
Serrated knife
Hole punch
Scissors
Pen or pencil

1.  Saw off a small circle of foam on the top and bottom of the large ball. Slice off a small circle of foam from the bottom of the small ball. Glue the flat side of the small ball to a flat side of the larger ball.

2.  Paint the tummy and the face of the penguin white. Paint the rest black shaping the face with a point in the center.

3.  Use the teardrop wood piece to trace and cut two wings from black foam. Use the end of the teardrop to trace a small half circle from orange foam for the mouth. Cut a smaller half circle to fit underneath that piece. Shape the flat sides of the half circles to fit the round surface of the face. Use the teardrop wood shape to trace and cut feet from the orange foam. Use the hole punch to cut two circles of pink foam for the cheeks.

4.  Glue the wings, mouth, wiggle eyes and feet to the penguin.

5.  Cut fringe in the ends of the felt strip and tie it around the penguin's neck.

6.  If you want the penguin to hang on your tree, poke a small hole in the top of the head with a toothpick and glue the ends of a loop of thread in the hole.

Smoothfoam™ is having a great giveaway as part of this blog hop.  You can enter to win this Snowman kit and more by leaving a comment on your favorite Smoothfoam™ project saying what you would make with Smoothfoam™.  So, hop around the Designer Crafts Connection blogs by clicking on the big blue button on the left side of this entry.  I can't wait to see what everyone has been crafting!
Happy Crafting with Smoothfoam™!
